The PhD. Employee-survey has been developed in ECRID: Early Career Researcher Identity Development: Research within and beyond academia -research project (2020-2024) led by PI Montserrat Castello, Ramon Llull University, Spain; CO-PIs Kirsi Pyhältö, University of Helsinki, Finland, and Lynn McAlpine, University of McGill Canada. The PhD. Employee -survey has been developed to measure PhD holders’ work experiences beyond the academia.
The survey has 13 scales measuring following constructs: Work Engagement (9 items) (Schaufeli, Bakker, & Salanova, 2006), Stress (1 item) (Elo, Leppänen, Jahkola, 2003); burnout symptoms: Exhaustion (4 items), Cynicism (4 items) and Inadequacy (2 items) (Pyhältö, Tikkanen & Anttila, 2023 ), Work-Life Balance (3 items) (adapted from McAlpine, Skakini & Pyhältö, 2022), professional support: Emotional Support (7 items), Informational Support (6 items) and Instrumental support (4 items) (drawing on Pyhältö, McAlpine, Peltonen & Castello, 2017) , Oral Communication (4 items), work activities: Research Activities (6 items), Interpersonal and Management Activities (5 items), and Business Activities (3 items).
